D.C. statute of limitations on sex crimes bill to be introduced
D.C. Councilwoman Mary Cheh is set to introduce legislation to end statute of limitations for 24 sex crimes.
The Washington Examiner reports that Cheh, who represents Ward 3, says the legislation will help victims seek justice.
"People may need more time to come to terms with what happened to them," Cheh tells the Examiner’s Alan Blinder. "By the time people recover, they may find that they cannot seek justice. There should at least be the prospect that somebody could still be held to account if the case can be made."
Some of the sex crimes that would be affected include sex abuse and sex trafficking.
Virginia and Maryland don’t have statute of limitations for felony sex crimes.
