DAYBREAK DAILY: Va. Beach examines Oceanfront mayhem aftermath
ABC7 WEATHER: Overcast, sporadic rain, highs in the mid 60s. http://wj.la/72e8x6
‘GOOD MORNING WASHINGTON’: Among the stories – Follow-up coverage of NBA player Jason Collins and his decision to “come out;” Smithsonian and sequestration; much more, beginning at 4:30 a.m.
VIRGINIA BEACH OCEANFRONT TURMOIL: Advance notice was lacking, per the Virginian-Pilot, “About a week ago, the police department began hearing inklings of a large weekend event planned for the Oceanfront to celebrate the end of college classes and beginning of finals, Deputy Chief Bill Dean said. But calls to local schools and Greek organizations turned up nothing, and no permits for bands or other events had been issued. That left police guessing. How many people were coming? What would they be doing?
“. . . Chaos and violence erupted when an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 people - roughly the turnout for a Memorial Day - congregated at the Oceanfront over the weekend. The crowd size surprised many. Police aren't sure where things went wrong, but the results included three shootings, three stabbings and three robberies, leaving at least eight people injured. All told, 148 people were arrested, though police said Monday they hadn't charged anyone in the more serious offenses because of uncooperative victims or incomplete descriptions of assailants.” http://bit.ly/14L6KXm
MEANWHILE: Locals are wary and unhappy, per WAVY, “. . .For residents who've lived at the Beach for years, the large, unruly crowds and violence that ensued won't soon be forgotten. "I've lived here for so long and to see a sight like that it's frightening," Evelyn Griggs told WAVY.com. "I wondered what in the world is happening." She was one of many people who said they felt like the city could have done a better job of notifying residents in advance to expect congestion at the very least.” http://bit.ly/ZOQFgy
TOO COZY?: Perhaps, per the Washington Post, “FBI agents are conducting interviews about the relationship between Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell, his wife, Maureen, and a major campaign donor who paid for the food at the wedding of the governor’s daughter, according to four people familiar with the questioning. The agents have been asking associates of the McDonnells about gifts provided to the family by Star Scientific chief executive Jonnie R. Williams Sr. and actions the Republican governor and his wife have taken that may have boosted the company, the people said.” http://wapo.st/13Hzr3e
MARYLAND AND ITS JAILS: Of an ongoing case, per the Baltimore Sun, “Tavon White, the accused Baltimore jailhouse leader of the Black Guerrilla Family gang, pleaded not guilty Monday to allegations that he oversaw a corruption scheme that employed corrections officers to smuggle drugs, cellphones and other contraband into the city detention center. White's appearance marked his first in U.S. court since the release last week of a broad federal corruption indictment against White and 24 others, including 13 officers. Wearing a gray sweatshirt, dark-colored pants, New Balance sneakers and ankle shackles, he walked into U.S. District Court with his hands cuffed at the front, escorted by four guards.” http://bsun.md/188cdXl
MARATHON BOMBINGS: Internet hawks swoop in, per the Boston Globe, “In the hours and days after the Boston Marathon bombings, the Internet savvy snapped up domain names related to the tragedy, registering sites like BostonMarathonMassacre.com, whose profit-seeking owner posted “Buy This Site” over the widely published Associated Press photograph of Carlos Arredondo rushing alongside the wheelchair of Jeff Bauman, who lost both his legs.
“That Monday alone, Go Daddy, the largest domain name registrar, experienced a 430 percent increase in registrations containing keywords such as Boston, marathon, or bomb, the company said. By Tuesday, registrations containing the same words had risen 555 percent.” http://bo.st/10QwDUK
MEANWHILE: More details emerge, per the New York Times, “Federal authorities are closely scrutinizing the activities of the wife of the dead Boston Marathon bombing suspect in the days before and after the attacks. The authorities are looking at a range of possibilities, two senior law enforcement officials said, including that she could have — wittingly or unwittingly — destroyed evidence, helped the bombers evade capture or even played a role in planning the attacks.
“As part of the investigation, F.B.I. agents are trying to determine whether female DNA found on a piece of a pressure cooker used as an explosive device in the attacks was from Katherine Russell, the wife of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the officials said.” http://nyti.ms/11yx1lP
COLORADO SHOOTINGS: Of a defense, per the Los Angeles Times, “Defense attorneys for accused movie theater gunman James E. Holmes renewed their objections Monday to the constitutionality of the state’s insanity defense, giving another hint about how they hope to save their client’s life. Holmes is accused of opening fire in a packed Aurora theater on July 20, killing 12 people and wounding 70 others. He is charged with 166 counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and weapons charges. Dist. Atty. George Brauchler announced April 1 that his office would seek the death penalty.” http://lat.ms/10Q8eOZ
POLITICO PLAY: “Democrats have used a clear and potent attack against Republicans in recent elections: Don’t vote for them because they’ll cut your Social Security and Medicare. But using that playbook next year, as Democrats had planned, just got a lot more complicated. President Barack Obama blurred the lines this month when he embraced entitlement cuts of his own as part of his budget plan. And Democrats now fear their leader’s tack to the center could blunt one of their sharpest weapons in the battle for the House of Representatives next year.” http://politi.co/ZT8hX9
ABORTION: Just the facts, per ABC7 – WJLA, “An Arlington-based pro-abortion rights group has released a video in which a D.C.-based doctor appears to say he would not help a baby if it was born alive after an abortion attempt. The organization Live Action says a woman 24-weeks pregnant shot the video undercover at a clinic run by Dr. Cesare Santangelo. She is heard asking Santangelo what he would do if an abortion was attempted, but she still gave birth to a live baby.” http://wj.la/155Sfhf
D.C. CABS: Of seeing red, per City Paper, “Washington's long-running debate over what uniform color scheme D.C. cabs should adopt will finally be over Wednesday when the D.C. Taxicab Commission announces the design. But NBC 4's Tom Sherwood is already reporting that the cabs will be mostly red with a gray stripe.” http://bit.ly/ZgjvSv
WHAT HE REALLY MEANT: Welcome to the spin machine, per the Washington Times, “Officials within the D.C. mayor’s administration spent much of Monday clarifying comments made by Mayor Vincent C. Gray about whether the fire department could effectively respond to a disaster such as the recent Boston Marathon bombings. Writing to D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, Mr. Gray in a letter dated April 22 was denying a request to increase overtime pay for the D.C. fire department when he stated it would be “almost impossible” for department employees to respond quickly to such an emergency given their far-flung locales.” http://bit.ly/17uRtrL
SPORTS, BRIEFLY: Nationals lose 3-2 against Atlanta.
NO I.D. REQUIRED: At least to a point, anyway, per ARLnow, “Arlington County Police have charged 43 people with underage drinking after breaking up a large, noisy teen drinking party in the Williamsburg neighborhood, ARLnow.com has learned exclusively. An officer responded to the 3500 block of N. Nottingham Street around 9:40 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, for a report of a loud party, according to police. Upon arriving, the officer approached the house and observed a large number of young people.” http://bit.ly/11S4zvz
