Matthew Garbamadhin accused in attempted Georgetown sex assault
A 23-year-old Springfield man is accused of kidnapping a college student in Georgetown, forcing her into an area park and attempting to rape her in an effort to allegedly lose his own virginity.
Police say Matthew Garbamadhin is charged with kidnapping and assault with intent to commit first degree sex abuse.
According to court documents released Tuesday afternoon, the 20-year-old victim was walking in the 2600 block of O Street, NW just after 4 a.m. Monday when she says Garbamadhin "grab her from behind and told her he had a gun."
She says she started kicking and screaming as he dragged her into the park. The suspect pinned the woman to the ground and put "a sock or hat in her mouth and some sort of powder in her mouth...," court documents add. The woman told police the suspect said "he had court in the morning for probation and before he wanted to lose his virginity." Police say she was able to fight him off and call 911.
An officer found the suspect just a few blocks away on 30th Street. Sources say he ran and jumped into the nearby canal to escape but to no avail. Officers grabbed him before he got away.
Garbamadhin is being held without bond.
