Cleman Richard Sweptson: Southeast shooting involving officer leaves suspect dead

An MPD officer shot and killed a man in Southeast D.C. Tuesday morning, officials say.

The incident happened around 3:05 a.m. along Sheridan and Stanton roads SE. The officer involved in the shooting was not hit, police say, while the suspect was hit twice in the upper body.

The deceased is identified as 34-year-old Cleman Richard Sweptson.

An officer in the area on routine patrol saw a man in the street acting erratically shortly before the shooting when the officer asked the person to get back on the sidewalk

The officer is a veteran with the department.
