Stephanie Kay Syslo killed in Cheverly fire
Fire officials have identified the woman killed in a Sunday morning fire in Cheverly.
Prince George's County fire crews were called to 2401 59th Place just before 8 a.m. Sunday. As one crew worked to extinguish the fire, another found 59-year-old Stephanie Kay Syslo on the second floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The state medical examiner determined she died from smoke inhalation and thermal injuries.
The cause of the fire has not been determined, but investigators believe it was accidental in nature.
Hoarding conditions inside the home made it difficult for firefighters to make entry, and a smoke detector found inside the home had no working batteries.
Prince George's County fire officials want to remind residents that they can get information on how to receive a free, working smoke alarm just by calling 301-864-SAFE (7233).
