Three-year-old boy on a daycare field trip left behind at Chuck E. Cheese
A local mother is outraged tonight after her three-year-old son was left alone for hours during a daycare field trip.
The daycare based in Southeast took the children to the Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in Laurel, but when the group left the little boy was left behind.
D.C. police were called to the Early Childhood Learning Center on Ridge Place in Southeast Washington Wednesday night after Corena West says her son Bryant was left behind by daycare staff members for hours 20 miles away at the restaurant.
"So I get to the daycare center and one of the teachers is crying and I'm like, 'what's going on?' And she said they lost him. Lost him? I said, 'find my child, find my child.'" West says.
Initially, daycare employees declined comment. They later told ABC7 that six staff members chaperoned 20 children on the field trip.
But West says those staff members forgot her son when they left shortly before 2 p.m. and didn't contact her until 4 p.m.
At that point, employees went back to the restaurant to get Bryant and return him to his mother.
"I was crying," West says. "I was upset. I was angry. I didn't know what to do. I don't know if somebody else would have took my child. My child could have came up dead. I don't know. That's my child."
When asked if someone forgot to count the child, Calvin Smith, program director of the daycare center, says, "I'm not at liberty to discuss that right now."
Smith said he couldn't discuss specifics. He stressed the daycare center takes children on field trips all the time without incident.
"Oh, i'm definitely concerned," he says. "But this was an isolated incident. And it's not something that has ever happened before."
