Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin played the decisive Games 6 and 7 of his team's first round loss to the New York Rangers with a broken foot, a source tells the Washington Post.
The Post's Katie Carrera reports that Ovechkin, who scored only one goal and one assist in the series, broke his foot while blocking a series of shots during the 1st period of Game 6.
The injury couldn't be exacerbated by playing, though, so Ovechkin remained in Game 6 and suited up for Game 7. The Capitals lost and were shut out in both of those games, ending their season.
Ovechkin is a nominee for both the Hart Trophy, awarded to the league's most valuable player, and the Ted Lindsay Award, awarded to the league's most outstanding player as voted by the players. He also led the league in goals during the regular season.
