Rabies cases in animals across Anne Arundel County are spiking in 2013, with nearly double the number of cases reported so far this year compared to the first five months of 2012.

The Annapolis Capital reports that 13 animals have tested positive for the disease and 56 Anne Arundel County residents have been treated for exposure.

The virus, which is spread through bites and scratches from infected animals, was only reported seven times between January and May of 2012.

The Capital reports that there are no plans to restart a program that distributed bait laced with rabies vaccine throughout the area. The funding for that project ended last year when its funding ran out.
