Anne Arundel food stamps more than double
Almost one in every 13 Anne Arundel County residents receives food stamps, a 162.4 percent increase in households over just five years ago, the Capital Gazette reports.
Countywide, about 3.6 percent of the population uses the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The number of people using food stamps in Glen Burnie, Pasadena, Annapolis and Severn is almost twice the countywide average.
The numbers reflect the recession that began in 2008, when more people needed help as they lost their jobs. Five years later, the effects still linger.
More than 47 million people were enrolled in the nationwide 2009 economic stimulus law last year. The law created temporary relief for those impacted by the recession and cost $78 billion last year, more than double the amount in 2008.
