Edgewater boat explosion leaves 6 hurt, including 2 children
Six people were hurt Monday, including two children, after a boat exploded at a marina in Edgewater, Md.
The explosion occurred at about noon at the Oak Grove Marine Center, in the 2800 block of Solomons Island Road.
Anne Arundel Fire Department official says a 32 foot vessel had just fueled up and was returning to the dock when its engine stalled. When the crew attempted to restart the engine, the explosion occurred. Six of the nine people on the boat were juveniles.
“We saw they were actually throwing the kids off the water,” says witness Katie Corradini. “There was smoke everywhere it was absolutely crazy insane.”
Two children hurt were flown to a burn center in Baltimore with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
A 13-year-old girl was also hurt in the explosion and is suffering serious but non-life threatening injuries.Three other juveniles, ages 13, 12 and 9, were also taken to a local hospital.
Authorities say a buildup of vapors likely caused the explosion.
“Vapors build up, and with the attempting to start an engine causes a spark, and that causes the explosion,” says Jack Bell of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.
Officials with the department of natural resources say it’s a common accident with boats. And as bad Monday's incident was, they say it could have been a lot worse.
