FBI joins investigation of smash-and-grab robberies
The FBI is now getting involved in the investigation into a series of smash-and-grab robberies at jewelry stores around the Washington area.
In early February, four men entered the Zales at Pentagon City, smashed several jewelry cases with hammers and got away with nearly $130,000 worth of jewelry.
The next day, a group of men walked into Frederick’s Colonial Jewelers with a gun and pepper spray and got away with jewelry.
Weeks later, four thieves stole over $600,000 in Rolex watches from Tourneau inside Pentagon City. Police say one of the suspects used a hammer to smash the front of the glass jewelry display.
The FBI confirms it is now assisting in the investigation because the brazen robberies are happening during the day in multiple jurisdictions. They are concerned about the propensity for violence.
