HOV Awareness Day means increased police presence
Police in Virginia and Maryland will be monitoring HOV lanes closely Thursday during the 4th annual “Capitol Region HOV Awareness Day.”
Law enforcement will be focusing on HOV violators along Interstates 66, 95, 395 and the Dulles Toll Road in Virginia. Expect officers to be out along Interstate 270 in Maryland as well.
Patrols from the Maryland State Police, Virginia State Police, Arlington County Police, Fairfax County Police, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police and Prince William County Police will also be out in full force.
Expect an increased police presence during morning and evening rush hours.
Police will be adjusting their enforcement methods to prevent traffic backups and added congestion. However, please remember Maryland and Virginia's "Move Over" laws. This requires you to give at least one travel lane between you and emergency vehicles or at least reduce your speed and proceed cautiously.
Last year police efforts issued a total of 646 summonses and arrests to HOV violators.
