Nine Metro stations to close Friday night
Updated: May 3, 2013 - 11:42 pm
In one of the biggest weekends of track work in recent memory, nine Metro stations on the Red and Green Lines will close for the weekend starting late Friday night.
"This is not routine track work, we are actually rebuilding the system, ripping out track, replacing track, reconstructing platforms," says Dan Stessel, WMATA spokesperson. "We know this requires some patience on the part of our customers, we know that they deal with a lot some weeks in terms of additional travel time and we thank them for their patience, but this work that is happening is absolutely essential for the safety and reliability of the system."
Platform reconstruction, track renewal and the activation of a new control room will force the closure of five stations on the eastern end of the Red Line. Those stations include Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring and Takoma. Shuttle buses will replace trains at those stations and trains will run between Shady Grove and Fort Totten.
The Red Line closures will last through the closing on the system on Sunday.
Meanwhile, on the southern end of the Green Line, track upgrades will force the closure of the Branch Avenue, Suitland, Naylor Road and Southern Avenue stations through the system's closure on Saturday night. Shuttle buses will serve those stations as well.
The stations will reopen Sunday morning, but trains will single track between Branch Avenue and Congress Heights. Trains will only operate every 30 minutes throughout the Green Line on Sunday.
Track work will also cause disruptions on the Orange and Blue Lines. On the Orange Line, trains will single track in two places: Between Clarendon and Foggy Bottom and between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly. Orange Line trains will only operate once every 26 minutes throughout the weekend.
Blue Line trains will also single track between Arlington Cemetery and Foggy Bottom. Those trains will also only run every 26 minutes.
