POLITICO will begin experimenting with a paywall this week, the site's management announced in a memo to staff Thursday.

The memo, which is signed by Executive Editor Jim VandeHei, Editor-in-Chief John Harris and COO Kim Kingsley, says that the metered paywall will be tested in six states and outside the United States. The experiment will go on for six months and will include shifting price points and page limits.

"With more than 300 media companies now charging for online content in the U.S., the notion of paying to read expensive-to-produce journalism is no longer that exotic for sophisticated consumers," the memo states. You can read the full memo on Dylan Byers' blog.

Politico rolled out its current subscription-based site, Politico Pro, in November of 2010.
