Prostitution ringleader set for sentencing
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A North Carolina woman is due in federal court in Richmond to be sentenced for running an interstate prostitution ring.
Michelle Matney will be sentenced Friday. Federal sentencing guidelines call for a term of 33 to 41 months.
Lawyers for the Greensboro, N.C., resident are asking for a 33-month sentence. Prosecutors say a sentence within the guideline range is appropriate.
Matney pleaded guilty to conspiracy to persuade others to travel in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution. According to court papers, Matney admitted recruiting and supervising an unspecified number of prostitutes from 2010 through 2012. Prosecutors say she recruited sex workers, put them to work in other states and received a portion of their earnings.
Henrico County police in suburban Richmond arrested several women who implicated Matney.
