Red Line third rail crack causes morning delays

A crack in the electrified third rail on the Red Line of Metro caused delays during the Wednesday morning rush hour.

The crack was discovered at about 6:30 a.m. between the NoMa-Gallaudet U and Rhode Island Avenue stations.

As a result of the crack, WMATA took one track out of service, forcing trains to single tracking between NoMa-Gallaudet and Fort Totten stations.

The repairs were completed about 90 minutes later and the shuttered track was reopened shortly thereafter. WMATA expected residual delays as a result of the repairs.
