More than a mile of the shoulder along a portion of the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County will be turned into a travel lane during peak hours, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Tuesday.

Aimed at further relieving traffic on one of the most congested roadways in the nation, let alone the Washington area, the shoulder along 1.5 miles of the inner loop of the Beltway between Old Dominion Drive and George Washington Parkway

$20 million will be allocated to the project, which should be completed by late 2014. A portion of that money will be used to rebuild the left shoulder of northbound Interstate 495 entirely.

The lane will only be open for travel during the afternoon rush hour, McDonnell said.
