A 57-year-old cab driver was shot and killed near Adams Morgan early Tuesday morning, MPD officials say, and two suspects are in custody after a shootout with police.
The shooting happened at about 3:15 a.m. in the 2300 block of Ontario Road NW, officials say. Officers in the area say they saw the taxi driver, Solomon James Okoro, in distress, then heard a gunshot. Two suspects then fled on foot.
During a subsequent pursuit, the suspects opened fire on the officers, who fired back. The suspects then broke down the door of a nearby home, where one of them was taken into custody. The other suspect was apprehended a short time later nearby.
Evelyn Ruiz says Okoro, a Nigerian immigrant, often spoke of his children. She said he was a kind, caring man who often said he would never refuse anyone a ride.
“It is really very sad because he has been with for fifteen years,” Ruiz says. “He is like a family to me right now.”
The first suspect, 32-year-old Ercell Overton of Northwest, was charged with murder I, felony assault on a police officer and burglary. The other suspect, 24-year-old Joshua King of Hyattsville, faces charges on an unrelated probation violation.
Overton allegedly forced his way into a house, where he was captured.
Okoro, who was shot in the shoulder, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Julia Robinson watched it all unfold.
"It looked like they detained one guy early on and then they kept on searching for someone else," Robinson says.
