Garey Jones appears in court on multiple stabbing charges
The Northwest Washington man who stands accused of stabbing four women in Northwest and Northeast D.C. was likely being treated for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, according to court documents.
MPD officials say that Garey Jones III, a 20-year-old Emerson Street Northwest resident, was arrested Friday in connection with the stabbing of a woman on Allison Street Northwest last Wednesday. Charging documents also link him to three previous stabbings that happened on May 5, June 10 and June 14 in the same area.
During the execution of a search warrant at Jones' home, the suspect's mother said that her son had been diagnosed with a mental disorder; a bottle of risperidone, which is used to treat both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, was found at the residence.
Jones was stopped by officers late Thursday night near 7th Street and Sherman Circle NW after an officer noticed that he matched a description of the stabbing suspect and had blood stains on his shorts.
According to police, Jones told the officer that he had cut his hand in a fight, but his story quickly fell apart. The search warrant for his home was served the next day, and Jones was arrested shortly thereafter.
Beyond the unexplained cuts to his hands and blood stains on his clothes, police also found clothing matching the description of what the stabbing suspect was wearing during several attacks.
The stabbings all happened within blocks of each other between May 5 and June 19, according to charging documents. The first happened May 5 in the 400 block of Emerson Street NW, just blocks from Jones' home. More than a month later, on June 10, the suspect allegedly struck again near 14th and Decatur streets Northwest.
Four days later, the third stabbing occurred on Adams Street Northeast, and the final one happened June 19 in the 1300 block of Allison Street NW. In each case, the victim said that the suspect began stabbing and did not try to say anything to or take anything from them.
