Kevin Maxwell officially named CEO of Prince George's County schools
For years, the Prince Georges County Schools have struggled with test scores, student safety and a host of other issues.
In hopes of lasting improvement, during the last state legislative session, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker engineered a partial takeover of the system. He not an elected school board, but he now hires the superintendent .
On Friday, he announced Dr. Kevin Maxwell will be the new school CEO of county schools.
“I feel like I've learned so much over my career and the great opportunities I’ve had and I bring that experience here,” Maxwell said.
Maxwell is currently the Anne Arundel schools superintendent. He was a Montgomery County administrator and before that spent 22 years in the Prince George’s system. He has lived in the county since the second grade. He graduated from Bladensburg High and he is promising change in the district he says he knows best.
“We're going to resolve those questions of leadership structure of finance,” he says. “I’m going to spend a lot of time out in schools this year personally and visit classrooms.”
So far, Maxwell who's won national praise for turning around a dysfunctional Annapolis high school, is enjoying widespread support.
“Because what we need right now is in Prince George’s County is someone who is qualified and committed to our school system,” says Del. Jolene Ivey.
