Leesburg neighborhood evacuated after military ordnance found
More than 100 Leesburg residents were evacuated Saturday afternoon when military ordnance, described as anti-tank missiles, was discovered in a residential neighborhood in the 500 block of Rockbridge Drive, SE.
Police, fire, and military crews were on the scene along with a bomb squad. A perimeter was extended to 400 yards, according to a posting on Facebook from Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd.
Police went door-to-door to evacuate the area, the mayor said.
“The revised and current evaluation of the ordinance is that they are anti-tank missiles, possibly from Desert Storm,” Umstattd said. “They are armed….The ordinance will have to be transported by the military to a safe location.”
“The community room at the Leesburg Police Department has been made available for residents while emergency personnel operate on the scene,” said James Williams, Battallion Chief with Loudoun County Fire and Rescue.
No injuries were reported.
