Local woman walks down aisle after recieving transplant from father
Jewel Edwards-Ashman just got married. But, her wedding almost didn’t happen.
Just weeks ago, she received a life-saving kidney transplant.
“When I found out the news, I thought ‘Is this real? Is this actually going to happen?” Edwards-Ashman said.
Several years ago, the 26 year old was diagnosed with a kidney disease. In January, doctors said she needed a transplant. Her younger sister tried to donate, but was not a match. The clock was winding down.
“It wasn’t so much that I was feeling like I was not going to get the transplant, it was just a matter of when am I going to get it?” she said.
That’s when her father stepped up as a surprise match. The successful operation took place in May.
“He saved my life, 100%. I think it’s just amazing that he gave me life and then it was also his kidney that’s the reason I’m actually sitting here today,” she said.
This past Father’s Day weekend, Jewel’s father walked her down the aisle.
“There’s no way I could ever repay him for just his wonderful gift of life that he’s given me twice now,” she said.
Jewel and her now-husband Ben are looking forward to starting their new life together—while sharing their story—hoping it encourages others to donate.
“So many people out there are waiting for these life-saving organs, and if you would consider donating blood, then you’re almost there,” she said.
