Maryland gun background check backlog up to 10 weeks delayed
Maryland's backlog on background checks for gun buyers continues to grow, the Washington Examiner reports, as the time people are waiting to receive clearance has reached 10 times the legal length of time for it to be done.
The Examiner says that more than 57,000 people have submitted applications to buy a weapon since Jan. 1, and the crush has increased an applicant's wait time for clearance to about 10 weeks.
Maryland's gun buying laws require the checks to be completed within seven days.
The backlog crunch is not a new problem, both in Maryland and nationwide. By the end of February, Maryland State Police said they had received 26,000 gun purchase applications, starting the wheels for the current delay.
Gun sales spiked nationwide both after the Aurora, Colo. movie theater shooting and the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
