National Park Service rolling out healthier food for visitors
Going out and enjoying nature and its wonders is getting a little healthier.
The National Park Service, though a program linked with First Lady Michelle Obama, is introducing new, healthier standards for the food being served at its parks.
The new program will be unveiled by the Lincoln Memorial by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis, The Washington Post reported.
Chefs from major concessionaires operating at parks around the country will join White House chef Sam Kass in handing out free samples of the new food items during the announcement. The new menu items will feature foods like bison tenderloin, free-range chicken breast, black bean sliders, sweet potato cakes, berry yogurt parfaits and rain forest coffee, the Post reported.
“Our national parks are renowned around the world for their breath-taking landscapes and important cultural and historical sites,” Jewell said in a statement prepared for the event. “Today, as part of the administration’s efforts to promote healthier lifestyles, we are making sure that great food is always an option for national park visitors,” she said, according to the Post.
