Obesity is a disease, American Medical Association says
It’s no secret that obesity is a growing problem in America. Right now, about one-third of adults in this country suffer from obesity, a diagnosis that is constituted by being 35 pounds or more over a healthy weight.
Obesity is even causing significant health problems in children, which has resulted in First Lady Michelle Obama making it her mission to promote healthy eating.
The American Medical Association decided on Tuesday to recognize obesity as a disease, and this decision could change the way doctors tackle obesity. For instance, those who are obese could be treated with a range of medical interventions, and the AMA's decision could also end up with treatment being paid for by insurance.
