A horrific crash at a busy Temple Hills intersection Wednesday evening left a young girl dead and the driver involved on the run.
The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of St. Barnabas and Temple Hill roads. Police say an SUV driven by a Hispanic woman struck a minivan, killing Azarya Johnson, 7.
“There was a minivan behind the first car. The first car was taking too long. The minivan came around to the car’s right side,” says Albert Dong, a mechanic at the nearby Shell station. “As he went around, the SUV or pickup truck t-boned him on the right side.”
Passing motorists saw the tangled wreckage.
“My mom prayed and said that she don’t want no one to get hurt,” says Jordyn Taylor.
Johnson's mother and sister were later released from the hospital.
Police say the driver of the silver Mitsubishi, who goes by the name Rosa, fled on foot. A man riding with her stayed behind and is OK.
Johnson lived nearby in a sprawling apartment complex in the 2900 block of Brinkley Road. No one answered the door Thursday, but neighbors describe a good family and a terrible tragedy.
“Anytime there’s someone that young involved it’s always heartbreaking, especially when you have children of your own,” says Louis Taylor, a neighbor. “My heart just goes out to the family and I pray for them.”
Anyone with information on the crash or the driver involved is asked to contact Prince George's County Police.
It's the second fatal crash involving a small child in Maryland this week. On Wednesday, 4-year-old Darius Harsha died several days after being critically injured in a Monday crash near Waldorf.
