WASHINGTON (AP/ABC7) - D.C. police have arrested a man suspected of stabbing four women in the Petworth neighborhood of northwest Washington.
A police spokesman says 20-year-old Garey Jones III of Washington was arrested Friday for allegedly stabbing a woman on Allison Street Wednesday.
In that case, police say the woman was attacked from behind, tackled to the ground and cut with a sharp object.
“I thought maybe a box cutter. I think the court documents said a pocketknife, so it’s a small little blade," the 25-year-old victim says.
The woman claims she was left with 10 knife wounds.
Jones is being investigated as a possible suspect in three other similar attacks.
“We have one person in custody,” says Chief Cathy Lanier of the Metropolitan Police Department. “We feel this is the person responsible for the attacks.”
Jones appeared in court Saturday morning and faced an assault with a dangerous weapon charge.
All four assaults occurred over the past seven weeks either late at night or in the early-morning hours. The attacks prompted Chief Lanier to urge women to take extra precautions when walking late at night.
In each case, the women were alone. The women were assaulted but were not robbed.
“I feel better,” says Deborah Johnson of D.C. “I’m still going to be careful because no matter what neighborhood you live in you still got to be careful.”
Police credit two MPD detectives for spotting Jones acting strangely in the neighborhood where the attacks happened.
“They observed a person whose behavior seemed out of place,” Chief Lanier says. “They made contact with that person, who matched the physical description of the suspect we were looking for.”
Court documents show that blood on Jones’ pants and other evidence were enough for police to get a search warrant at his home. Items there led to his arrest.
“Trying to just grow from it and take the best from it and heal rather than quell fear," the victim says.
