Southwest Airlines could start operating international flights out of Baltimore -Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport by 2015 in a reversal of recent travel trends there, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The low-cost airline currently operates out of 28 gates at BWI, expanding rapidly in the region in the past decade.

The Dallas-based airline does not offer any international flights on its own currently. Its subsidiary AirTran, which Southwest merged with in 2011, operates flights to the Caribbean and Mexico.

The Sun reports that international air traffic at BWI has decreased substantially over the past 20 years. Several airlines, including US Airways, Aer Lingus and Mexicana, have all dropped service at the Anne Arundel County airport.
