Critics say Fairfax city measure restricts abortion clinics

A measure that critics say is aimed at restricting abortion clinics was passed by the Fairfax city council Tuesday night, the Washington Post reports.

The bill, which passed by a 5-2 vote, will enact new requirements in the city that force medical offices to go through a detailed approval process, obtain approval from the city council and pay a $4,800 special use permit.

A long line of critics who turned out at the meeting said that the measure is solely to restrict abortion clinics from operating within the city of Fairfax, the Post says. However, city officials said during the meeting that their goal was to create "predictability" in the categorization of clinics in the city.
