DOD furloughs to take effect
Starting Monday, a major round of furloughs is taking effect at the Pentagon—due to sequestration.
Some 650,000 Department of Defense civilian workers will be forced to take the first of 11 scheduled unpaid days this week. The employees must take one unpaid day off each week from now until September 21. The days off amount to a 20 percent pay cut.
The furloughs were ordered by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in an effort to meet mandated sequester budget cuts.
