MPD: Robbery, assault investigated as hate crime
D.C. police are investigating a Saturday morning assault and robbery in Northwest as a hate crime.
Police say three black males approached a white man just before 1:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of Euclid St. NW. They shouted "This is for Trayvon Martin" before pushing him to the ground.
Police say the suspects kicked the man in the face and body and then stole items from his pockets.
The victim had minor injuries and refused treatment.
Police have not released the suspects' ages.
An unarmed Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in February 2012 in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman's recent acquittal in Martin's death has sparked mixed reactions around the world.
