Nationals' Ian Desmond among National League Final Vote candidates
Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and pitcher Jordan Zimmerman already have their tickets punched for a trip to the 2013 MLB All-Star Game in New York. Another one needs help from the fans to get there.
Shortstop Ian Desmond is one of five National League players in the Final Vote competition. The annual MLB.com poll lets fans choose the final All-Star for both the National and American Leagues.
Desmond's competitors for the final NL roster spot include Atlanta's Freddie Freeman, San Francisco's Hunter Pence and both Adrian Gonzalez and rookie phenom Yasiel Puig from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 87 games this season, Desmond is sporting a .281 batting average with 15 home runs and 49 RBI. He was one of Washington's representatives in last year's All-Star Game.
As of Monday morning, MLB.com says that Freeman holds the lead among National League players, just barely edging out Puig. Voting ends on Thursday afternoon.
On the American League side, fans can choose from Detroit's Joaquin Benoit, Toronto's Steve Delabar, New York's, David Robertson, Tanner Scheppers from Texas and Boston's Koji Uehara.
The 2013 MLB All-Star Game, which is being held this year at Citi Field in New York, will be held on July 16.
