A 22-year-old man died yesterday in a plane crash that Fredricksburg.com is calling an apparent suicide.
Virginia State Police earlier this morning identified the man as Fredricksburg native, Edwin G. Hassel.
Fredricksburg.com reports that Hassel had called Shannon Airport earlier Monday evening to reserve the single engine Cessna 172 airplane.
Later that evening, his plane was spotted flying erratically and Hassel did not respond to other pilots calling him through the radio prior to his crashing.
James Stover, the man who had leased the Cessna 172 to Hassel explained the plane had been inspected before take off and all equipment was in working order.
Spotsylvannia Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Pierce said that dispatchers received calls about someone threatening to commit suicide shortly before the airplane crashed.
According to Fredricksburg.com, a woman described as Hassel's fiance by witnesses was seen at the airport, both before and after the plane crash.
This crash is still under investigation.
