ANNANDALE, Va. (AP) - Virginia officials have ordered a northern Virginia college that catered to foreign students to shut down.

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) on Friday told the University of Northern Virginia in Annandale to cease operations.

SCHEV said the school it is losing its certification because it has failed for the last five years to receive accreditation from any organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Last year the school reported to SCHEV that it had 497 students enrolled. It once had more than 1,000 students, mostly from India.

In 2011, federal immigration officials raided campus offices amid allegations that the school's primary function was to allow those enrolled to obtain a U.S. visa.

A call to the school Tuesday went unreturned.
