Washington Capitals schedule 2013-14: Season opens Oct. 1 in Chicago
The Washington Capitals will be on hand Oct. 1 when the Chicago Blackhawks raise their 2013 Stanley Cup champions banner.
The National Hockey League released its 2013-14 schedule Friday afternoon, and the Capitals are slated to open their season on the road in the Windy City on Oct. 1.
Washington is playing its first season in the newly-formed Metropolitan Division, a creation of the league's new alignment.
After opening in Chicago, the Capitals return home for their home opener on Oct. 3 against the Calgary Flames. In total, Washington will play six of their first eight games at the Verizon Center.
Each of the 29 other teams will play at least one game in Washington as part of the league's new alignment and schedule format. The Capitals are joined in the new Metropolitan Division by Carolina, Columbus, New Jersey, the New York Islanders, the New York Rangers, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
The Capitals will play each team in their division five times per season. Perhaps most importantly to Capitals fans, though, the Pittsburgh Penguins visit Washington on Nov. 20 and March 10.
