ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WJLA) - Flames ripped through the roof of a Fairfax County townhouse Thursday evening, claiming the life of a 54-year-old man.

Firefighters were called to the house in the 8600 block of Vanoy Court around 9 p.m. Officials believe the blaze began on the second floor.

Clifford Johns was found unconscious in his bedroom and died at an area hospital.

Orin Davis captured the blaze on camera.

“I came around the corner and just saw a lot of fire and smoke,” Davis says.

Three other people in the house escaped the blaze.

Neighbors say Johns used to be a music teacher, adding that he's lived in the community for nearly 30 years.

Fire officials say the smoke detector in the home wasn't mounted and didn't go off.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Officials estimated the fire damage at $50,000.
