It probably wasn’t the ideal place to deliver a baby, but authorities report a woman gave birth in a vehicle along the southbound lanes of I-270 in Germantown Thursday morning.

The woman gave birth to a girl at I-270 near Route 118. Authorities say the woman and baby were transferred to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.

"She was a term delivery, a midwife patient trying to stay at home as long as possible,” says Amber Richter, clinical nurse manager at Shady Grove Hospital. “She wanted a natural birth and she got a natural birth."

It wasn't the mother’s first delivery but definitely one that will always stand out.

The woman began experiencing labor pains at about 6:15 a.m. and contacted authorities.

The family of three is doing well.

The birth comes just two weeks after a woman had a baby inside the L'Enfant Plaza Metro station. But hospital officials say an unplanned birth outside of a hospital is not as rare as you may think.

"It’s actually not super unusual,” Richter says. “We get about half a dozen babies born outside of a hospital each year."
