WASHINGTON (WJLA) - For decades it was the beat that didn’t stop. Now, on what would have been Chuck Brown’s 77th birthday, the godfather of go-go is remembered.

Brown’s daughter KK was overwhelmed by the gesture.

“It's an honor that they honoring my father,” she said. “It means everything. It's his birthday, so it's like emotional. It's a great thing. We're really honored that they're doing this for my dad.”

At a ceremonial groundbreaking in Northeast, Mayor Gray and Brown’s children unveiled plans for the soon to come memorial.

“It's just extraordinary,” Gray said. “I knew chuck brown -Chuck Brown was a friend of mine. And what a sad day it was when he passed.”

So to keep the memory alive, the park will have artistic renderings of Brown, sculptures and musical instruments. Officials say it’s a way for families to connect through the legend’s music.

But, it’s not without controversy. Original plans called for an amphitheater –but pressure from neighbors squashed the idea. Even the smaller structure there today will be razed to make way for the memorial wall. The argument among residents and officials lasted months. Brown’s family stayed neutral.

“It don't matter to us,” KK said. “We just, as long as we -we know the people love him, and we love ya'll for doing anything for him. We thank the fans because that's what he loved the most -the fans.”

Officials say it comes with a one million dollar price tag and is scheduled to be finished by next summer.
