BLADENSBURG, Md. (AP/WJLA) - Relatives of the man who drowned in the Anacostia River in Bladensburg Saturday say he was trying to grab his shoe that had fallen into the water.
Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady says someone called 911 around 2:30 p.m. about a person in the water at the Bladensburg Marina.
Relatives identify the man as Julio Rolando Mendez Lopez, 25.
Six teams from Prince George's County and D.C. launched a massive search on the river. Lopez's body was recovered nearly two hours later not far from where he had gone under.
Officials say the area where Lopez's body was found is nine feet deep and dangerous.
"It's more about the murkiness and that silt," says Chief Marc Bashoor. "It's like quicksand. It will suck you in. People think they can get out of it, but they can't."
