Cuccinelli campaign receives $500,000 from NY financial consultant
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A New York financial consultant has pumped $500,000 into a political action committee supporting Ken Cuccinelli in this year's governor's race.
It's one of the largest single political gifts in Virginia politics in recent years.
Robert Mercer was a major 2012 underwriter of Republican causes. Campaign finance reports say Mercer gave the money to Chesapeake-based Virginia Principles Fund on Aug. 9.
The Virginia Public Access Project says it's the largest single check this year and is tied for the fifth-largest single donation to a Virginia candidate or committee since 1997. That's the year the nonprofit and nonpartisan VPAP was formed.
The Center for Public Integrity shows Mercer gave $2 million to the GOP American Crossroads PAC in 2012.
