WASHINGTON (WJLA) - If you're anxiously awaiting D.C. cabs to take your credit card to pay for your trip, you'll have to wait a little longer. More than half of the city's cabs will not be ready to accept cards by the Sept. 1 deadline, WTOP reports.

A spokesman with the D.C. Taxicab Commission tells WTOP 2,000 to 2,500 cabs will be equipped with devices by the end of this month. However, over 4,000 cabs still need another month before they can begin taking credit cards.

Some taxicab owners and payment service providers were concerned they couldn't meet the Sept. 1 deadline, even though new regulations took effect on June 1.

Any cab that is not equipped by the end of the extension period will face action, including impoundment, the spokesman tells WTOP. Further extensions will not be granted.
