SPRINGFIELD, Va. (WJLA) -- For hours on Thursday, this normally quiet section of Springfield was on lockdown after a tactical unit responded to a volatile standoff involving a male homeowner.

The man killed is identified as 46-year-old John Geer.

"It was very scary because I've never seen coming down the street a SWAT team -- I mean, a swat team?!" exclaimed neighbor Valerie Findley.

"A police officer came up to me and said, 'You need to get out of the area right now,'" said another neighbor, Scott Dowling, who walked out of his home and snapped a picture of a heavily-armed officer poised to react.

Fairfax County Police say that sometime during the mid-afternoon, they responded to a domestic dispute on the 7900 block of Pebble Brook Court. They were told that Geer had weapons.

Police say they negotiated with Geer near the front of the home for about 40 minutes, and then an officer shot him when, according to investigators, Geer retreated into his home and refused to come out.

"We are investigating this as an officer-involved shooting," said Fairfax County Police spokesperson, Bud Walker. "When the hostage rescue vehicle approached, it made entry and the folks that where going to render aid went inside. They did discover the subject inside deceased."

Police say they are focusing on figuring out why a shot was fired and if Geer really was armed or not.

"At first it just sounded like somebody was barricaded in the house, but now we are hearing about gun shots," said neighbor Chris Mizera. "I don't know all the facts, but yeah, it's kind of scary when you think about it."
