WASHINGTON (WJLA) -- Outside the courthouse on Friday afternoon, family members of deceased firefighter Marc Dancy spoke with District detective Tony Patterson, who broke the case in which 39-year-old Melvin Linkins was charged with killing the off-duty firefighter.

Marc Dancy’s death in January 2011 brought out many mourners, including Mayor Gray. According to charging documents, Linkins was staying over with his estranged wife in an apartment building on 7th St. Northeast, and secretly got ahold of her cellphone.

At approximately 3 a.m., a text came in from Dancy, after which police believe the husband started texting back. They had a brief conversation, and shortly afterwards, police found Dancy’s body in the vestibule of an apartment building. They believe Linkins, who stands at 6’3” and 250 pounds, beat the 5’5” Dancy to death.

Dancy was married with three children, worked out of the D.C. Fire Department’s busy Engine 10. His relatives declined to speak with us as they left the courthouse.
