Metro's suspicious package response is concerning to former Marine

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A former Marine who reported a suspicious package at the Foggy Bottom Metro station was concerned to find that neither Metro nor D.C. police took his call as seriously as he did.

John Garrett, who served four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as a sergeant in the Marine Corps, was waiting for a Metro train May 11 when he spotted a plastic bag wrapped around the tracks. Garrett approached a Metro employee at the Foggy Bottom station but was initially ignored. When Garrett persisted, he said the employee threatened him with bodily harm.

After being ignored by the Metro employee, Garrett called 911 to alert the police. The former Marine sergeant said it took D.C. Police a half hour to respond to his call, by which time the bag had been run over by a train.

“You hear the commercials on the radio if you see something say something call the police and I did,” Garrett said. “At the time they acted like they didn't care and this was right after Boston. This is a post 9/11 world and suspicious packages should be taken serious and it wasn't.”

The police response to Garrett’s call prompted him to file a complaint with the department. In its response to that complaint, D.C. police said “officers responded inside the station but did not locate [the suspicious package].” Garrett said police did in fact find the package, but the cell phone video he took of the police response didn’t begin until after the plastic bag had been discovered.
