OPM, SSA continue to combat retirment payment fraud
The Office of Personnel Management and the Social Security Administration is busily combating the ongoing problem of fraudulent retirement claims, Federal Times says.
Improper retirement payments have dropped by nearly 29 percent since 2007, but that number is still at about $100 million per year, according to OPM records.
Federal Times says that the problem lies in spouses of former federal workers who continue to collect payments on behalf of their deceased loved ones long after they've passed away.
