Overseas Defense employees forced to pay back housing assistance
Hundreds of Defense Department employees who are stationed overseas may be on the hook to pay the government back hundreds of thousands of dollars because they received housing allowances that they should have, Federal Times reports.
In May, Federal Times says that the DoD told 659 civilian employees who are stationed outside the United States that the large sums of money they received in housing assistance was erroneous in nature and that they'd have to pay it back.
The repayment for some employees could reach into the millions of dollars, officials say. In the meantime, most have been informed that instead of a wholesale solution, their cases would have to be heard on an individual basis.
