Robyn Gardner still missing two years after disappearance in Aruba
Friday is the two-year anniversary of the tragic disappearance of Frederick woman, Robyn Gardner. According to WTOP, prosecutors in Aruba say they still believe Gary Giordano of Gaithersburg kidnapped and murdered his traveling partner.
"The case is still open, and we accuse him of murder, kidnapping, and fraud," says Ann Angela, a spokesperson for the Aruban prosecutor's office.
Gardner disappeared on August 2, 2011, and Giordano told police that she never returned after they went snorkeling. Giordano was detained in Aruba for almost four months, but was later released due to lack of evidence. He was never charged, and Gardner's body has still not been found.
Giordano was never charged, and Gardner's body was never recovered.
In the days after Gardner's disappearance, Giordano contacted American Express, asking for payment of a travel insurance policy he had taken out for Gardner. Giordano sued American Express in Illinois, and the company countersued Giordano in Maryland.
Court records show the case is nearing settlement. Danielle Colson-Unglesbee, Gardner's sister, tells WTOP that Gardner's family "is still hoping for her return."
