Through an interpreter, Johnny Pimente, 42, told the judge he was remorseful for what he did and asked for leniency.

Pimentel, a former day laborer who assaulted numerous women in 2011, pleaded guilty June 17 to two counts each of malicious wounding and unlawful wounding.

Pimentel's attacks were carried out between February and July of 2011 at a handful of Fairfax County shopping centers, including Tysons Corner Center, Fair Oaks Mall and several others.

In each attack, Pimentel snuck up behind a woman in her 20s and cut their backsides with a razor blade or box cutter. Prosecutors nor Pimentel's attorneys have ever given a motive for his attacks, but called the case a "bizarre and terrible" one.

Pimentel gained national notoriety as the "butt slasher" during the assaults.

"I can't explain to anybody because he was normal," said Euclides Paredes, Pimentel's family friend.

Paredes describes his friend as a hard working family man who never showed any odd behavior.

After the attacks, Pimentel fled to his home country of Peru, where he was eventually tracked down and arrested in Jan. 2012.
