ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - Capital Bikeshare made its way into suburban Maryland Friday with the introduction of 51 new stations in Montgomery County.
The 51 stations in Montgomery County will circulate an additional 450 bikes into the popular system, which already boasts stations in Arlington and Alexandria counties in Virginia as well as the District.
Bernard Solnik says he took the road to better health on a bike.
“My office is near my home,” Solnik says. “So pretty much three to four days a week I’ll bike to my office.”
Solnik hopes more people will take two wheels to work thanks to the Capital Bikeshare network in Montgomery County.
For just a few dollars riders can rent a bike, ride for miles and then drop it off at another location.
“Bike sharing is another cost effective transit option that can help reduce traffic congestion by eliminating the need to drive. especially those short trip in our urban areas,” says County Executive Ike Leggett.
Councilmember Hans Riemer hit the road after the launch. He admits the love affair with the personal car will never fade, but says Bikeshare offers a unique addition.
“This is about the growth potential when you look at ‘how are we going to move more people ten years from now than we are today’,” Riemer says.
But Kensington resident Mary-Kate Rasa says even with Bikeshare, she’ll probably continue to take her car to work.
“If I lived closer that would be a possibility,” she says. “But for now, yes, I'll be sticking with the car.”
In addition to its Rockville stations, Capital Bikeshare's Montgomery County locations will include stations in Bethesda, Friendship Heights, Takoma Park and Shady Grove.
