Cardinals' Rashad Johnson loses tip of finger during game in New Orleans
(WJLA) - An Arizona Cardinals player suffered one of the more gruesome injuries in the NFL in recent memory Sunday when he lost the tip of his middle finger.
Cardinals safety Rashad Johnson was injured during his team's 31-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Arizona Republic's Kent Somers, Johnson, who is in his fourth season in the NFL, was hurt while tackling a Saints player during a punt return.
Johnson's injury happened on a punt return, tackling sproles. Not sure what happened, might have smashed in ground. #AZCardinals— Kent Somers (@kentsomers) September 23, 2013
During that tackle, Somers says that doctors believe Johnson's finger was crushed and partially severed. He said on Twitter that a small piece of Johnson's bone was exposed.
Johnson had surgery on his right middle finger after the game, during which Somers says he lost a portion of his finger down to about his first knuckle.
While this type of injury is quite rare, it's not unheard of. In 1985, Hall-of-Famer Ronnie Lott had a portion of his pinky finger amputated after it was crushed during a game while playing for the San Francisco 49ers.
